Mother Knows: Vera Stewart of VeryVera

We're so excited to introduce Vera Stewart, the creative force behind VeryVera. Read on to hear about her life as a cookbook author, entrepreneur, grandmother, and everything she's loving right now.

Meet Vera

I am Vera Stewart – a cookbook author, host of The VeryVera Show, caterer, mentor, and entrepreneur. My career spans more than 40 years, and I’ve touched nearly all areas of the food and hospitality industry. In my career I go by Vera Stewart, but my married name is Vera Kilpatrick. I am a proud wife to Andy, and mother to five children/stepchildren and grandmother to ten.

Her Edit — What She's Reaching for Right Now

Cole Haan Tennis Shoes

I operate from a standup desk which has changed my life over the last 2 years. Energy through the roof! These are my favorite shoes that allow me to stand comfortably all day and be ready at moment’s notice in style to run to the next meeting.

Nature Valley Crunchy Oats ‘N Honey Granola Bars

Set your watch, I eat one at 10:00 a.m. every day. I started this journey in my first year as a teacher in 1975 (the year the bar was invented) and that was my snack in the teacher’s lounge. That’s the food I would wish for if I was on a deserted island. It truly gets me through my day.

How I Built This podcast

As an entrepreneur, I am fascinated by the stories behind the brands we all recognize. It is my go-to podcast when I’m traveling, and I honestly lose all track of time when I’m listening. My favorite episode is Chicken Salad Chick – she was actually a guest on my show!

The VeryVera Cookbook Trilogy

As an author of three cookbooks, it’s no secret that I’m always reaching for one of my own books! These books include recipes passed down from generations and there’s something for everyone. The common thread between them is LOVE.

For the Children — What She's Loving Right Now

Patriotic Collection

You just can’t beat a classic Americana look in the summertime! The darling Katherine Dress in Patriotic Plaid was worn by one of the children featured in my newest cookbook, Generations. The outfit paired perfectly with the recipe for Star Spangled Fresh Fruit Cookies.

 Melissa & Doug Toys

I learned all about this brand on How I Built This podcast, and I love buying their creative, quality toys for gifts.

OXO Silicone Spatula

This isn’t a kid-specific item, but it’s kid-friendly and my favorite kitchen tool! This is a staple at our VeryVera Cooking Camp and it’s a perfect learning tool for all ages. I am incredibly passionate about getting kids in the kitchen, and having the right tools helps.

VeryVera Cooking Camp

Not a thing, but an experience for Augusta, GA locals! I’ve run this camp for more than 20 years and it is my greatest passion. The camp helps children learn cooking and entertaining basics in a fun, engaging way that will carry them far in life. Local store and Little English retailer, Posh Tots, is a wonderful camp sponsor this year!

Of Note — What's Inspiring Her Lately

Currently, I'm inspired by the people I’m surrounded by in life and work. With the recent release of my third cookbook, Generations, I’ve been immersed in the generations of people – both before and after me – who have impacted my life and made lasting memories through food and time spent around the table. Right now, we are also knee deep in The VeryVera Camp and I find myself incredibly inspired by the young people who started as campers at age 8 and are now helping run the camp as counselors. They are confident and poised and talented. They are inspiring!

Her Last Word

What is the best advice you've received on motherhood?

Don't make everything so easy for your children and instead invest in the time to teach them important life skills – responsibility, independence, how to deal with hardships, and stand strong in the face of adversity. My father passed away when I was seven and my mother was left to raise five children alone. She made sure we lived in a happy home but set the example of excellence and expected that from us. While I didn’t understand this until later in life, it’s a lesson I am grateful for because it crafted me into the person and mother I am.
